2/8/2010 - Fans Waiting for the Olympic Torch

Fans waiting for the arrival of the Olympic Torch at one of these community celebration sites will have the opportunity to play recycling trivia, try out an interactive display that shows how PET plastic bottles are recycled, and view videos that highlight the Coca-Cola system’s recycling and package sustainability initiatives. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to talk to Olympic fans across Canada about recycling,” said John Burgess, President of Coca-Cola Recycling. “Our used packaging is a valuable resource that can be used to produce new products and the Olympic Torch Relay community celebrations give us a chance to showcase those possibilities.”

Anyone who has ever packed for a family vacation can imagine how extensive the preparations were for a trip like this. During the Olympic Torch Relay, the Recycling Education Vehicle will travel more than 8,500 miles across Canada through the dead of winter. “It’s taken a lot of planning to get the REV ready for the Olympic Torch Relay,” said Mary Anne Biddiscombe, Director of Marketing for Coca-Cola Recycling. “We updated the graphics on the outside of the truck and trailer, equipped it with an engine block heater, snow tires and chains, and installed a heater inside the trailer to keep the computers and video screens from being damaged by the cold. We created a new video about recycling and produced educational materials in French since Canada is a bilingual country.”

After the games begin, the REV and its crew can be found at the Richmond O Zone, the largest free festival in the Vancouver area during the 2010 Winter Games.
